Your first 30 days with the Apple Watch Series 12

The box tells you what the Watch Series 12 measures. This is the part it leaves out: which of those numbers you can believe in the first week, which need a month, and what to set before the first run so the month is not wasted.

Before the first run

Twenty minutes on the first evening. Everything the Watch Series 12 will tell you for the next month is built on a heart-rate trace, a satellite mode and a screen setting, and all three are decided here.

  1. Put it where the sensor works

A finger’s width above the wrist bone, one notch tighter than feels natural for the first week, sensor window clean. The Watch Series 12 has a 46 mm case and wants a wrist of about 156 mm or more to sit flat; on a smaller wrist it rocks, and a rocking sensor is the source of half the strange numbers in month one. See wrist and case size .

  2. Set your maximum heart rate, or clear it

Every zone, every training-effect score and most of the load figures hang off this one number. If you know it from a recent hard effort, enter it. If you do not, delete the age-based default rather than leaving it: a wrong maximum quietly miscounts every run.

  3. Leave the GPS mode alone

The Watch Series 12 has one satellite mode, which is one fewer thing to configure. Its 10 h GPS figure is the one to plan long days around.

  4. Choose gesture or always-on, and mean it

The Watch Series 12 has an AMOLED screen. Always-on is the single biggest drain after the GPS chip — the site’s battery guide takes a fifth off for it — and gesture mode is what the quoted 10 h assumes. Try gesture for a week before deciding it annoys you.

  5. Build one data screen you will actually read

Pace, heart rate, distance, time. Four fields, one screen, big digits. Everything else can be a second screen you swipe to when you want it. The stock screens show too much and you will read none of it at speed.

  6. Know where the maps come from

The Watch Series 12 shows maps through the phone’s maps app — from the phone, or over cellular on a model that has it — rather than from tiles stored on the watch. Out of signal, it shows what it last loaded. Check the route while you still have coverage.

  7. Load music now, decide about it later

Music from the watch to earphones is convenient and expensive: on the one maker that publishes a figure, GPS with music is about a third of GPS alone. Load a playlist while the watch is on the charger, then treat it as a short-run feature until you have checked the battery planner for anything long.

  8. Set up payments while you have your cards to hand

Contactless payment from the wrist is set up in the phone app and needs a card and a passcode. It is a five-minute job that always seems to come up when you are twenty kilometres from home without a wallet.

Week one: the numbers that appear first

The Fitness and Vitals apps on the Watch Series 12 starts producing figures after the first run and the first night. These are the ones that arrive first, with what each one needs before it means anything.

  • Activity rings — from the first day: Move (active calories), Exercise (minutes) and Stand. They are a habit tool, not a training tool, and the default Move goal is usually low for a runner.
  • Heart-rate zones — computed from your heart-rate reserve automatically, shown live in workouts. Worth checking against a hard effort in week one; edit them in the Watch app if the top zone never appears.
  • Cardio Fitness — Apple’s VO2max estimate, after a few outdoor walks or runs with GPS and heart rate. It is graded against age and sex, and it is conservative.
  • Training Load — after each workout the watch asks for, or estimates, an effort rating from 1 to 10, and shows the seven-day load against the twenty-eight-day average. The comparison needs both windows to fill.

Weeks two and three: the numbers that need data

The second layer of figures is where the Watch Series 12 earns its price, and where a new owner is most often misled — because each of them shows a value before it has the data to justify one. What follows is what each needs, on this maker’s system: the baseline takes about a week for Vitals, a few workouts for Cardio Fitness.

  • Vitals — overnight heart rate, respiration, wrist temperature, sleep duration and blood oxygen, each against your own typical range. The range needs about a week of nights; after that Vitals flags outliers rather than scoring you.
  • Training Load as a comparison — the twenty-eight-day average is the whole point, so the “above your usual” and “below your usual” readouts are meaningful from the second month.
  • Sleep stages — from the first night, if Sleep Focus is on and the watch is charged for it. This is the watch where the charging routine decides whether the overnight data exists at all.

Weeks three and four: what to trust

Apple deliberately does not give you a readiness score. Vitals tells you when a night was unusual for you, Training Load tells you whether the week is heavier than your recent normal, and the rest is left to you. After a month both have the ranges they need. The habit that works is a glance at Vitals in the morning and at Training Load on the weekend.

  • Two or more Vitals metrics out of range on the same morning is worth taking seriously; one is noise.
  • Rate effort honestly. A hard session logged as a 4 is what makes the next “below your usual” wrong.
  • Charge before bed, not overnight: forty minutes while you wind down is enough, and it is the only way the overnight data exists.
  • The model cannot see illness or life stress — see training load and readiness, and how much to believe .

Two figures on the Watch Series 12 are worth writing down at the end of the month, because they are the ones you will compare against later: the fitness estimate and, if the watch shows one, the morning recovery figure. Everything else is a snapshot.

Battery on the Watch Series 12

These are the Watch Series 12’s own figures, and the arithmetic the site’s battery guide applies to them. The quoted number is the best case; the settings you chose above decide which line you actually live on.

ModeHoursWhat it assumes
GPS, quoted10 hThe manufacturer’s figure, cheapest satellite mode, screen in gesture mode, no music
… with the screen always on≈ 8 hA fifth off, per the battery guide
… with music≈ 3.2 hAbout a third of the figure above it — the only maker that publishes this ratio is Garmin, and it is applied to every watch as an estimate

For a race, take a further fifth off for a cold day and then add your margin — or let the battery planner do the sum for the Watch Series 12 with your settings and your finish time. Everyday battery of 2 days means a charging routine, and the overnight data depends on it: charge before bed, not during it.

What the catalogue says about it

The finder ranks the Watch Series 12 on the same figures this page uses. Its one-line verdict: Two more workout hours and a real chip upgrade. Still not a running watch.

Where it is strong

  • The first real chip upgrade in three generations, and faster charging.
  • Ten workout hours, up from eight — a marathon with margin now.
  • ECG, Vitals and the widest health feature set here.

What it gives up

  • Ten hours of GPS still rules out anything past a long marathon.
  • No multiband, and the training tools are thin.

If any of that is news after buying it, the finder will show you what the trade-off bought you — and what sat next to it in the ranking.

Questions readers ask

Is Cardio Fitness the same as VO2max?
It is an estimate of it, from outdoor walks and runs with heart rate, and it tends to read low against a lab test and against Garmin’s figure. Compare it with itself, not with another watch.
Do I need a chest strap?
Only if the wrist trace is wrong for you; the watch pairs with Bluetooth straps directly. See [wrist or chest: which heart rate to trust](/guides/wrist-or-chest-heart-rate).
How long before the watch actually knows me?
About a month of consistent wear, including nights. Week one gives you a heart-rate trace and a first fitness estimate; the load and recovery figures need about a week for Vitals, a few workouts for Cardio Fitness; and only after that is the Watch Series 12 describing you rather than an average runner.
